08.20.08: CSU Alumni Interview with Joe Conrad
At Cactus , there's a pretty intense rivalry between the Rams and the Buffs - heck even our agency's leaders quarell over their dueling alma maters. Joe graduated from CSU, and Norm from CU. In honor of this weekend's Rocky Mountain Showdown at Invesco, here's an interview Joe recently did for the CSU alumni magazine. One up for the green.

Joseph Conrad
Cactus Founder, CEO and Strategic Director

Can you briefly describe what you do?

I work with our clients and our internal teams at Cactus to develop, create, produce and launch integrated marketing communications campaigns that drive results while simultaneously building our clients’ brands. As strategic director, I spearhead the research, positioning and strategic planning phases of a campaign. From there, Cactus’ creative, production and media teams bring our campaigns to life. I’m involved at just about every stage to ensure our work is on brand and consistent across all communication channels –– offline and online.

Can you talk a little about how you got into your job after leaving CSU?

After leaving CSU I went backpacking through Europe. I had a great time but ended up back in Denver with no money, no job and no idea where to begin my career. Fortunately, I had done some solid work while at CSU and had a pretty decent portfolio, a bunch of clips from my job as a reporter at the Collegian and a couple of internships under my belt. I sent out a bunch of resumes and cover letters, got one job interview and thankfully landed my first professional gig. I was hired as an assistant account executive at a Denver-based marketing firm that specialized in public relations work. It was a great first job experience and I had an excellent mentor at the firm, but I knew advertising and marketing communications was where I belonged.
