01.08.10: Let us resolve.
Cactus cardDone much beatboxing, lion taming or spelunking lately? Or ever? Why not resolve to do shake things up in 2010? At Cactus, we have a good feeling about the New Year and we’re inviting our friends to resolve to make 2010 count. To make the most of our time here. To live more and laugh more. Let’s resolve to try and fail and succeed.

To get the movement rolling, we created a Resolution Cactus kit – complete with a collection of resolutions designed to inspire and amuse. The kits were mailed with 30 cards and a diagram to use as a reference for building the Cactus. We asked recipients to share their creations with us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Cactus cardCactus Designer Jorge Lamora came up with the initial concept for the card. He wanted to send people something fun and interactive that would last longer than just the initial opening of the card. Like a Rubik’s cube or Bucky balls, the Cactus can be a desk figurine to fiddle with all year long. Copy, design and production of the Cactus was a collective effort and Sprint printed the kits.Cactus card skinny dipping

12.17.09: Two Cacti, three hours and a few hundred pounds of turkey
rjlee_arvadapress.jpgrjlee_turkey.jpgOn the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Cactus copywriter Lee Perlman and associate creative director Ryan Johnson spent a few hours helping a charity prepare meals for those less fortunate in the Denver community. They were part of a small army of volunteers donating time and resources to License to Dream, a non-profit that delivered 3,500 meals on Thanksgiving Day. Arvada Press, a local community paper, covered the event and captured Lee and Ryan in action. The two creatives were humble in discussing their contribution, but bragged endlessly about their newfound meat-slicing skills. If the ad gig doesn't work out, they will likely become sandwich artists at Subway.

11.25.09: Something to be thankful for
Lee on Mt RanierThis August, I did something huge. I climbed Mt. Rainier in Washington —the most extensively glaciated peak in North America. But I wasn't just climbing for myself. I was climbing to help raise money for Backpacker Magazine’s Summit for Someone program.

Summit for Someone is a benefit climb series that raises money for Big City Mountaineers. BMC is a recreational mentoring program that provides urban youth in need of positive adult mentoring with a challenging and safe wilderness experience. To qualify for the climb, I had to raise $4000. That was a mountain to climb in itself considering how crappy the economy has been. But with the help of generous friends, family and coworkers, I met my goal and set off on the biggest adventure of my life. At 8:15 a.m. on August 16, I stood (and jumped!) on what felt like the top of the world--14,411 feet. The air was thin. My legs were burning. But my heart sang. My group of nine climbers had raised over $42,862 for Big City Mountaineers, which will be used to enhance the lives of nearly 200 at-risk urban youth. Big ups to BMC for this incredible experience. And big ups to everyone who made it possible. Life is grand.

11.13.09: Matt is halfway to 50,000 word goal for NaNoWriMo
As if senior art director Matt Chiabotti doesn't have enough on his plate at Cactus, he's also participating in the 2009 National Novel Writing Month, NaNoWriMo. The goal of NaNoWriMo is to write a 50,000 word novel in one month, namely the month of November. While Matt is a full-time art director, he's also a closeted writer and an overall lover of all things literary, so he's giving this a shot.

nanowrimo.jpgIn addition to his writing duties, Matt will be raising money to help the Office of Letters and Light, a non-profit that “organizes events where children and adults find the inspiration, encouragement, and structure they need to achieve their creative potential.” Basically, they offer free creative writing programs in more than 1,000 classrooms, 400 communities and 75 libraries around the world. If you'd like to make a donation, click here .

To keep up on Matt's progress throughout the month, you can visit his NaNoWriMo page or friend him on Facebook. Here's his latest update from Day 10 at 12a.m.:

Ok, so I was going to post yesterday, but I wanted to wait until I had some big news, and today I do indeed have some big news. The word count currently stands at 20218. That's right, over 20,000 words have been penned, err, typed in the name of NaNoWriMo. My poor little laptop is beginning to strain under the weight of all the verbosity, but fret not. He's on a strict training regimen of pixel curls and server crunches while I sleep. He assures me he is up to the task of carrying my 50,000+ word burden, as long as I am up to writing it. "Oh yes," I assure him. "I am up to it."

-m.
