Something to be thankful for |
This August, I did something huge. I climbed Mt. Rainier in Washington —the most extensively glaciated peak in North America. But I wasn't just climbing for myself. I was climbing to help raise money for Backpacker Magazine’s Summit for Someone program.
Summit for Someone is a benefit climb series that raises money for Big City Mountaineers. BMC is a recreational mentoring program that provides urban youth in need of positive adult mentoring with a challenging and safe wilderness experience. To qualify for the climb, I had to raise $4000. That was a mountain to climb in itself considering how crappy the economy has been. But with the help of generous friends, family and coworkers, I met my goal and set off on the biggest adventure of my life. At 8:15 a.m. on August 16, I stood (and jumped!) on what felt like the top of the world--14,411 feet. The air was thin. My legs were burning. But my heart sang. My group of nine climbers had raised over $42,862 for Big City Mountaineers, which will be used to enhance the lives of nearly 200 at-risk urban youth. Big ups to BMC for this incredible experience. And big ups to everyone who made it possible. Life is grand.

Matt is halfway to 50,000 word goal for NaNoWriMo |
As if senior art director Matt Chiabotti doesn't have enough on his plate at Cactus, he's also participating in the 2009 National Novel Writing Month, NaNoWriMo. The goal of NaNoWriMo is to write a 50,000 word novel in one month, namely the month of November. While Matt is a full-time art director, he's also a closeted writer and an overall lover of all things literary, so he's giving this a shot.
In addition to his writing duties, Matt will be raising money to help the Office of Letters and Light, a non-profit that “organizes events where children and adults find the inspiration, encouragement, and structure they need to achieve their creative potential.” Basically, they offer free creative writing programs in more than 1,000 classrooms, 400 communities and 75 libraries around the world. If you'd like to make a donation, click here .
To keep up on Matt's progress throughout the month, you can visit his NaNoWriMo page or friend him on Facebook. Here's his latest update from Day 10 at 12a.m.:
Ok, so I was going to post yesterday, but I wanted to wait until I had
some big news, and today I do indeed have some big news. The word count
currently stands at 20218. That's right, over 20,000 words have been
penned, err, typed in the name of NaNoWriMo. My poor little laptop is
beginning to strain under the weight of all the verbosity, but fret
not. He's on a strict training regimen of pixel curls and server
crunches while I sleep. He assures me he is up to the task of carrying
my 50,000+ word burden, as long as I am up to writing it. "Oh yes," I
assure him. "I am up to it."
-m.
