03.11.08: Who is Clyfford Still?
Clyfford Untitled 1964Clyfford was an American Abstract Expressionist painter who, unlike most Abstract Expressionist painters, didn’t suck. He had an amazing eye for color and organic composition, and his work displays an energy and beautiful ferocity that few have been able to achieve.

When he died in 1980 he left a treasure trove of paintings, many never seen by anyone, that he and his wife decided should be preserved as a complete collection. So his wife announced that she would donate the entire collection to which ever city would build a museum dedicated to the collection. Clyfford painting

Denver, and I think Hickenlooper, was smart and brave enough to really push for this cause and beat out several other cities for the collection. So in 2010 our fair city will be graced with yet another amazing piece of architecture dedicated to art, and be all the better for it. This is what Plus Gallery Owner, Ivar Zeile had to say, “Though every city has a museum dedicated to art on a wide scale, or even an MCA, no American city can lay claim to a museum such as the Still and it is this kind of prestige that fully resonates when considering Denver’s cultural legacy.” Kind of a big deal.

If you are interested, the Denver Art Museum is currently exhibiting a few of his works.

Now you know.

True, Clyfford Still was a brilliant painter. Is it fair, though, to label the American Abstract Expressionists as sucking? Those who suck? Monarchs of suckdom? How is it possible to stand in front of Pollock's "Male and Female" or to view in person any of Motherwell's Elegies without feeling the weight of their genius? Breathtaking, really.
Good blog though.
