The Japanese brand Muji stands out in a market that is saturated with labels and big brands. Muji is a chain of stores across Japan and Europe that sells everything from pencils to furniture to clothing to food, all completely unbranded.
Muji is a stark contrast from the hyper in your face rhythm of the busy
streets of Japan. The stores are like retail zen gardens, full of
simple designs and minimal colors. I was first drawn to Muji because I
was living in a shoebox apartment (10¹x10¹ kitchen included) and needed
ways to organize all my stuff. Muji¹s products helped create an
uncluttered feel, which is difficult when you¹re in an apartment
smaller than some walk in closets.
There are currently no stores in the U.S., but I¹ve been told they sell
a handful of products at MOMA¹s gift shop. Until they open up a store
stateside, you can go to www.muji.net to salivate over the array of uncluttered, simple products.
