02.06.08: North Denver Metro Students Ride Rails in Detention
You may have heard of Detention , but are you still wondering what an "urban rail jam" looks like? Watch this footage from our first qualifier at North Stadium in Thornton last night.

Even considering the bitter cold temps, kids were stoked to be at the event. Fifteen finalists are moving on to compete in the Finals at Ruby Hill on Feb. 22. The next qualifier is at Highlands Ranch High School tomorrow, Feb. 7.

Oh, and some Cacti play supporting roles in the video. See if you can spot us.

02.04.08: The Eve of Detention 2008
DetentionSome fellow Cacti and I are scurrying around to pull together the final details for Detention 2008. Once again, Own Your C will be sponsoring the Detention Rail Championship Series, an urban ski and snowboard competition for high school youth.

Own Your C is a public education campaign focused on youth tobacco prevention and cessation that is paid for by the State Tobacco Education & Prevention Partnership of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and was developed by Cactus. Detention provides a unique venue to engage teens and promote physical activity and healthy alternatives to tobacco use.

Own Your C, in conjunction with Winter Park, will be trucking in loads of snow and setting up rails in a series of competitions throughout the Front Range.  The first event is Tuesday, February 5 at North Stadium in Thornton.  Check out the competitions MySpace page to see what’s going on with this year’s events.

Check back here for updates from the competitions.

01.31.08: Director Ace Norton's new video for The Mountain Goats - a simple idea well executed

Let me start off by saying that The Mountain Goats are hands-down my favorite band of all time, so I was very excited to hear that a new video was on the way to support the release of the band’s new album, Heretic Pride.

To be honest, the video could have been utter rubbish and I would still love it. Fortunately, it’s about as far from rubbish as can be. In fact, it’s quite amazing. Director Ace Norton, who has done previous videos for Death Cab for Cutie, Aesop Rock and Simian Mobile Disco, puts the song’s lyrics at the forefront in this well thought out and dizzyingly photographed video. This is a perfect example of a simple idea well executed- an ideal we at Cactus often aspire to, so it is with much respect that I tip my hat to Mr. Norton and congratulate him on a job well done.
