05.23.07: My first blog
Well, here we go. My first dip into the brave new world of blogging.

I have spent my first two professional decades honing my marketing communications skills and along the way I have milked every marketing vehicle known to man to get results for our clients. Since day one we have always worked hard to help clients figure out how to grow and get the most out of their marketing resources. We worked hard at Cactus in the mid-90’s to help our clients establish a relationship between their brands and their customers. Our campaigns had to rely on repetition and work to create a forum for two-way communication with consumers. What a chore.

Then Al Gore gave us the Internet. Or was it the guys from Yahoo!. Anyway, I digress. The advent of the Internet was an amazing thing to live through as an advertising agency owner. For the first time, we had the perfect medium for creating rich, meaningful brand experiences with consumers who actually wanted to receive the information we were trying to get out. What a concept. What an amazing new technology. And what a god-send to every marketing person who was looking to substantiate the value of their existence.

Web sites were like the second coming of the marketing saviour, the perfect marriage between marketing and sales. The ability to actually track the effectiveness of campaigns and tie it directly back to sales. We embraced the new technology and added it to our arsenal of marketing weapons. We integrated it with offline strategies, used it to track customer preferences, conducted commerce, invited feedback, stayed in touch, created communities, encouraged referrals and developed loyalty. Ah, marketing utopia.

Web site and online advertising has come so far in the past ten years. The rich, meaningful brand experiences you can create with consumers in 2007 is amazing. There are no rules and no limits on how far your imagination can take you. When I first heard about blogging my first impression was, “Oh great, just another thousand assholes with an opinion.” But the more I submersed myself in this world the more I have embraced what a an important role blogging is contributing to the overall evolution of this wonderful, living, breathing, potent thing called the Web.

New technology is alive and well at Cactus and is evident in the work we do. Our latest example, the Fixnixer. Cactus, on behalf of our client at the State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership, invented a new youth tobacco cessation tool. The Fixnixer is the world’s first online and mobile cessation program that uses blogging and text messages to help quitters stay strong to support their individual attempt to give up smoking. Check out Fixnixer at fixnixer.com.

Now that wasn’t so hard.
