06.05.07: Fixnixer: New Text Messaging Tobacco Cessation Tool
Fixnixer.comAt its best, a great ad or marketing tactic hopes to get noticed, make an impression and generate a response, all the while building brand loyalty. That’s the pinnacle and it’s what we strive for everyday. But in 2007, we raised the bar. Our team at Cactus not only invented a new marketing vehicle, but we also produced a brand new product that helps people quit smoking. In March, Cactus and our client partner at the State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (namely Jodi Kopke and Katy Kupecz) launched the FixNixer , the world’s first online and text messaging cessation tool for helping young people give up tobacco.

When we began working on this issue, we looked at it from every perspective and sought to understand all of the work and progress that had come before us. As a result of our in-depth research and exhaustive review of national youth cessation programs, we really felt like there wasn’t a good option for young people who wanted help quitting tobacco. And that just didn’t sit well with us. While adult cessation programs were proving to be successful, 12- to 18-year-olds were often on their own when it came to quit using an extremely addictive product. The American Lung Association’s Not on Tobacco (NOT) program, a group counseling cessation program in some high schools, was doing great work but were only able to serve a very small percentage of the teen smoking population.

Cactus saw an enormous need for a new cessation tool that was much more in tune with young people and used today/s technology to deliver a relevant and meaningful quit program that was free, completely anonymous, accessible over the Internet and used current text-messaging technology. The FixNixer captures specific user information from a brief online profile and then creates a customized, 21-day quit program. FixNixer creates a customized quit home page with a calendar, motivational quotes, daily blog etnries and online forums for quitters to share information. Based on information provided, Fixnixer then sends out timely, personal, motivational quotes via text messages to remind you why you are quitting and encouraging you to stay strong.

After just eight weeks, the Fixnixer has more than 600 registered users in Colorado who are using it to help support a quit attempt. We are incredibly proud of the FixNixer and the promise it holds in helping people break the cycle of nicotine addiction. It was indeed a truly collaborative team effort that was the direct result of a lot of committed, smart, passionate and talented people who believed in the project and did their part to make it a reality.

I have been teaching N-O-T classes for a couple of years now, and the idea behind fixnixer sounds great to me! Do you have some literature/brochures or some kind of pamphlet I could give to kids? My frustration is always that I can't help enough kids, so I could at least offer them some support if they can't do my class. I can just give them your website, but it seems like it would be good to give them something to take with them to share with their friends that explains what fixnixer is.

I want to know as much about you as I can so I can get information out to District staff and teens.
