Things I’ve learned after a year at Cactus |
I’ve worked in this industry for almost seven years, and Cactus is my fourth agency. I’ve learned a lot in that time, and at the risk of sounding overly cheesy, the biggest thing I’ve learned is that coming to work here has been one of the best moves I’ve ever made. After hitting the one year mark last week, it made me think of some of the interesting (depending on your perspective) facts I’ve learned. Interesting or not, these things and many others have made the past year pretty awesome.
1. There is such a thing as anti-bacterial, fade resistant vinyl, but it’s expensive.
2. Rigid polysterene can’t have ink on it before you heat score it, it breaks.
3. Learning how to work on a Mac after working on a PC all your life can convince you you’re not as smart as you thought you were.
4. Creative Directors are very easily distracted by shiny objects. (or at least ours is).
5. Working for a place that believes in what they do every day makes it so much easier to come to work in the morning.
6. Anti-smoking campaigns and promoting free health screenings for women are way cooler than the next used car incentive.
7. Put a penny vending machine on your desk with M&M’s in it, and people will come visit you throughout the day.
8. Working in a place where the creativity is encouraged from everyone, not just the creative department, is inspiring.
9. Having an office on 15th Street is cool!
10. You can reproduce a paper sculpture in acrylic, but it’s hard, and really time consuming.

My friend, and fellow Cacti ACD, Brian Watson has a long tradition of bestowing new Cacti with a “Cactus given name.” At first we thought he was nuts, but the names some how always seem to click.... Here’s his latest delegations, just so everyone is up to speed:
